Deciding to Cosplay as Mio from the Fatal Frame II Remake was kind of a random decision. I had been playing the 2026 remake with my friends Adrien and Stillvisions over at Stillvisions place since he bought a copy. I had played the original game way back around 2005, so it was quite nostalgic. Stillvisions kept joking that I should Cosplay from it. Over the spring I was looking at sites like Aliexpress and found a number of sellers had costumes for the twins for very cheap prices. I kind of thought they were scams. For fun I decided to order a Mio costume from an Aliexpress seller. It was only a little over $40 for a full costume including blouse, skirt, tank top, capri pants and belt. I was surprised a few weeks later when the costume showed up.

The costume is actually pretty good quality. It's all polyester, so it's quite warm despite being a very breezy looking costume. The blouse and pants have cinching details, so they have strings to tighten the clothing and the strings were super long. I had to cut them. I also added belt loops to the skirt using some white bias tape as the skirt had no way to keep the belt in place and I didn't want it to slide around. The skirt was kind of disappointing as they added a layer of elastic right at the hip line so it gives the skirt a bubble effect that's not particularly flattering. The skirt also has some very shiny fabric so it gives a bit of a cheap vibe. I really like the material of the blouse and the lace detailing. It was pretty faithful to Mio's outfit design.

I used a black bob wig that I had bought years ago for a Silent Hill 3 Nurse costume that I never got around to making. I ended up using the wig for my Splicer costume. It was nice to have another use for it. It's not exactly perfect for Mio. It has fuller bangs and is a bit short in length for the character. It would have worked better for Mayu. I had a heck of a time keeping the bangs separated when I wore it. I finished the costume with a pair of black flats from Ardene that I've had for a couple of years. Mio's shoes are brown, but I thought my shoes suited the look.

I originally intended to wear the costume at YetiCon 2026 since I thought it would make for a great shoot in the forest around the village. I did bring it to the con, but I couldn't find a good time to wear it and I decided to just wear my other costumes and treat the con as more of a vacation. Just a day after getting back from Yeti, Stillvisions told me about Anime Fiesta happening the following weekend at Black Creek Pioneer Village. I thought it might be fun to go for a day and get some photos of Mio in an old-timey setting. Not really a Japanese old-timey setting, but a similar vibe. Stillvisions actually bought an antique camera that was a similar style to the Camera Obscura from Fatal Frame, which made for an epic prop. I was able to bring it to Anime Fiesta. I also brought a flashlight for taking photos in dark corners.

Overall, Anime Fiesta was fun. There were some neat spots around the museum including the basement of a mill that made a great spooky backdrop. The only unfortunate thing was that the event only ran until the early evening and we couldn't get any photos after dark. It's a great location to explore, though!

As a light summer costume, Mio was fun to wear. It's a really interesting design and the version I bought was pretty faithful. I do wish parts of it were more flattering. The cinching on the blouse did tend to look a little skewed and the bubble skirt was not very forgiving for the midsection, but it felt nice to wear on a hot day. I don't really think I looked much like Mio and I don't think my wig was the best for the character, but I'm pretty happy with the photos that I got at Black Creek. It was great to Cosplay another horror game protagonist and I was so nostalgic posing as Mio. It was great to see a new design for another classic horror game character.
